Ryanair Chase Background

The Ryanair Chase was added to the festival in 2005 when a fourth day of racing was included in the festivities. It is open to horses aged five and over and during the race distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs there are seventeen fences to be jumped.

The race boasts an impressive prize purse of £250,000 and has produced some impressive winners in recent years, as the legendary Cheltenham duo of Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls have produced the goods. The pair claimed glory in 2005 through Thisandtheother and again in 2007 via Taranis to ensure they lead the way for most wins in the race since its inauguration in 2005. Trainers Nicky Henderson and Nigel Twiston-Davies have one win apiece and it highlights the quality of horse on show that such renowned trainers enter contenders from their stables.
