Pertemps Final Hurdle Background
The Pertemps Final Hurdle is a handicap race and is run on the Thursday of the Festival after being served by several trial races during the preceding season. It is open to horses aged five and over and involves a distance of 3 miles, with 12 hurdles to be negotiated along the way.
Many outsiders have claimed glory in the race in the past, while trainer Jonjo O'Neill jointly leads the way for most wins for a trainer with three. The Irishman claimed consecutive victories in 2003 and 2004 to equal the record held by Jane Pilkingon. She claimed glory thanks to Willie Wumpkins' consecutive victories in 1979, 1980 and 1981, which in turn gave his jockey Jim Wilson three wins and Wilson still heads the table for most wins for a jockey.
