County Hurdle Background
The County Hurdle is another handicap race at the Festival and takes place on the final day. The race was established back in 1920 and was for a long time the last race of the festival but was rescheduled for earlier in the day in 2009.
The race involves eight hurdles over a 2 mile and one furlong trip, and is open to five years olds and older. The race has thrown up plenty of surprise winners in the past but it is the usual suspects that lead the way when it comes to the number of race wins. Trainer Paul Nicholls and jockey Ruby Walsh are the leading men in their respective fields after enjoying success with Sporazene (2004), Desert Quest (2006) and American Trilogy (2009).
