Champion Bumper Background
Formerly known as the Festival Bumper, the Champion Bumper is the only race at the Festival that doesn't involve fences and it currently rounds off the second day of racing. It has enjoyed a short history at the festival after first being added in 1992, and it involves a distance of 2 miles and half a furlong and is open to horses aged between four and six years of age.
It is a key race for the following year's Supreme Novices Hurdle at the festival as winners of the Bumper often go off as favourites in the Supreme, and many often go on to enjoy success over obstacles at Cheltenham.
1997 winner Florida Pearl went on to forge a great career and his trainer Willie Mullins has built a formidable record in the Bumper, claiming six winners. Jockeys Paul Carberry, Charlie Swann and Richard Dunwoody lead the way for most wins in the race with two apiece, and Carberry could well add to that tally this year.
