Foxhunter Steeple Chase Background
The Foxhunter Steeple Chase is the richest and most prestigious hunter chase of the season as it offers a prize purse of £40,000. It is for amateur riders and horses aged four and over, although horses must qualify for the race by performing well during a certain time period.
A horse qualifies if it has finished first or second twice in hunter chases or won two point-to-point chases, or achieved one first or second in a hunter chase and one point-to-point chase win.
The race was established in 1946 and involves a 3 mile and 2 and a half furlong distance, with 22 fences to be negotiated. Several horses have won the Foxhunters twice but not since Earthmover in 2004, while Richard Barber is the leading trainer with four wins during the 1990s.
